I just realized yesterday...

...that I live right across the street from an all-girls' catholic(?) middle school. Evan, you can come visit me now ;)

On another note, I am too smart for Internet Explorer apparently. It can't understand the concept of me wanting to use Internet explorer for browsing but Netscape for my mail. I go into the options and Netscape is set as the default mail client, but when I click on a mailto link, Outlook Express opens, which is frustrating because Outlook Express doesn't even know my account info. So why would it think that Outlook Express is the right choice?

(sigh) This day, this week, cannot end soon enough. I just want to relax for a little while.

Where are you setting the default clients? You have to go into the windows settings in the countrol panel. Simply setting it in the browsers doesn't work. (At least it didn't work with Thunderbird and Firefox). How about uninstalling Outlook Express? That should fix it.

I got to the Internet Options via IE, but it's the same one as the control panel. And as nearly as I can tell, Outlook Express is integral. The Add/Remove dialogue specifically refers to a start menu shortcut (dur).

I guess I'll just have to copy and paste email addresses into Netscape like a chump.

Also I hate when people make their links bold on mouseover. Stupid bitches.

Here's how...

You want "Set program access and defaults" not "Internet Options". Its on my start menu but you can also get there by going control panel -> Add/Remove Programs -> Set Program Access and Defaults (in the left column).

Once there you'll get three radio buttons Microsoft, Non-microsoft, and Custom. Click custom and it lets you set default mail clients, browsers, media players, and a coulpe others things.. Make sure you save, you may need to reboot. Closing all the clients before hand should help as well.

As for removing Outlook Express I just verified that I can remove it from Add/Remove on one of my test boxes at work so it shouldn't be integral. It may prevent you from removing it if its your default e-mail editor though. Prehaps, once you set the default client to something else it will allow itself to be nuked as it properly should.

I have a strong bias against Outlook Express though, so if you're content to let it live there but not be used more power to you.

Re: Here's how...

I use Outlook Express at home, but Netscape is SRI's preferred client for their system. I can't stand the browser though. I don't know if you're running a different version or what, but Outlook Express doesn't even show up in Add/Remove Programs, and under Add/Remove Windows Components, it takes up 0.0MB and literally says it refers to the shortcut only. Not that it matters, if this worked. I'll see tomorrow, since I don't have the patience to reboot right before I leave. As of now, Outlook still comes up :P

Thanks for your help. I always appreciate being able to further subjugate my operating system. It's probably the main thing that keeps me away from Linux.
